JOIN US THIS FRIDAY
The post(?)-pandemic outlook for construction

A year ago, construction was hit harder in Washington than in nearly any other state. Since then, the industry has rebounded strongly, but there are signs that the recovery is stalling.
Where is construction headed nationally, statewide, and around Washington? What help or hindrance is likely to come from "the other Washington?"
Join us virtually at 10:00 a.m. this Friday, March 5 as AGC of America chief economist Ken Simonson peers into his crystal ball to discuss these questions, along with the outlook for different project types, materials costs and supply-chain issues. Register today…
Action Alerts
still in effect

Capital-Gains Tax
Click the Action Alert link below to let your State Senator know that you are OPPOSED to Substitute Senate Bill 5096 which would impose a capital-gains income tax. Urge your Senator to vote NO on SSB 5096. Under this bill, a 7% tax is imposed on the sale or other voluntary exchange of long-term capital assets by individuals, with certain thresholds and exemptions. The IRS unequivocally says that a capital-gains tax is an income tax. ActionAlert link: http://bit.ly/ActionAlertSB5098

Expansion of Paid Family Leave;
Unemployment-Insurance Voluntary Quits

Contact your State Senator today to tell them you are OPPOSED to Senate Bill 5097 which would expand paid family-leave and rolls back small-business protections) and OPPOSED to Senate Bill 5064 (UI voluntary quits). These bills will cost employers and employees more money when still dealing with the impacts of the pandemic! See the ActionAlert link for both, below.
Senate Bill 5097 dramatically expands eligibility for the paid family leave program (e.g., expands definition of “family member”), and rolls back protections for small business. The result will be increased taxes on employers and employees.
Senate Bill 5064 dramatically expands eligibility for unemployment insurance (UI) by expanding what’s allowed as a covered “voluntary quit." This bill would cause even more funding challenges for the UI system and increase costs for employers. ActionAlert link: http://bit.ly/ActionAlertsSB5097-5064
MEET THE BUYER
Doing business with WSDOT
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) purchases millions of dollars’ worth of products and services from area businesses each year. Join them via Zoom, March 4 at 9:00 a.m., for this informative session to learn how WSDOT does business and how to prepare to be competitive at the state level. This session will cover topics such as products/services they purchase, requirements to do business with them and more.
Presenters will include representatives from the Office of Equal Opportunity, DBE Support/VOSB, Procurement, Ad and Awards, and Construction.
Attendance is limited.

New (hopefully lower) UI rates released
If you haven't yet, you will soon receive a revised unemployment-insurance rate notice for 2021. For most businesses, this new rate will be significantly lower than the rate you received back in December, thanks to AGC-backed legislation that was recently enacted. The legislation helped mitigate the COVID-related impacts which could have sent UI rates skyrocketing. Contact Jerry VanderWood with questions/comments.
WIC Week awards
& scholarship opportunities

AGC of Washington is proud to be supporting NAWIC Puget Sound's Women in Construction Week, March 7-13. As part of the week's activities, NAWIC is seeking applications for two exciting opportunities. First, nominations are still open for WIC Week Awards in several categories of excellence in the construction industry. See award descriptions and criteria online. Also, NAWIC will be offering a scholarship to Arcade Wayfinding's Foreman Basic Training; an eight-week, part-time intensive program designed to erase the "sink or swim" approach to training field leaders in the industry. NAWIC is currently fundraising for this scholarship, and seeking applications of womxn candidates for the upcoming March session. If you would like to donate or would like to nominate a candidate, please contact Kabri Lehrman-Schmid.
