Construction technology: working smarter, Safer, more efficiently

NOVEMBER 9, 7:30 – 9:00 a.m.
Adopting construction technology on a jobsite can increase efficiencies, reduce costs and improve productivity levels. In our second part of our Construction Technology series, this presentation will address using technology such as the Topcon GTL-1200 series total station/scanning solution to QA/QC new construction with in-field results. This new workflow is an exciting step forward for this application.
Currently, when QA/QC is done like this in the field, it usually requires extensive office time to get the same result that this new process delivers in the field in a fraction of the time. If your entire fleet of equipment is connected, the machines work together at a higher productivity level. This presentation will highlight how easy this equipment is to use, as well as the benefits and various applications of it. Join us at the Bellingham Golf & Country Club. Future Focus: Tools for a digital jobsite
(Constructor Magazine) Throughout the construction industry, firms are embracing must-have, game-changing technologies to improve safety and enhance efficiencies and productivity.
“Construction tech is ramping up in a big way,” says Parker Mundt, operation director of Suffolk Technologies, a part of Suffolk Construction Company of Boston, a member of multiple AGC chapters. “We have to keep our eyes out for what will make us the safest and most efficient builder. We are devoted to innovation and productivity increase in the industry.”
Suffolk invests in early-stage tech companies and helps them navigate the industry and refine their products.
The ability to use technology in the field and not just in the office has been a factor in greater adoption of technology in construction, reports Eric Cylwik, director of innovation for Sundt Construction in Tempe, AZ, a member of multiple AGC chapters.
iPhones and mobile devices “became a tipping point for accessibility of information and reaching anybody with a question,” Cylwik says. Read more…
Construction adds only
1,000 employees in October

Firms struggle to find more workers amid tight labor conditions for the construction sector.
(AGC of America) Pay continues to increase as average hourly earnings hits $35.27; industry officials push for measures to encourage more people to pursue high-paying construction careers.
The construction industry added only 1,000 employees in October while it continued to boost wages for hourly workers as firms compete to hire from a small labor pool, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of new government data. Association officials said the small increase in construction employment is an indication of how hard it has become for construction firms to find qualified workers to hire.
“The construction sector would likely have added more jobs in October if only firms could find people to bring on board,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “Labor market conditions are so tight, however, that the sector barely increased in size even as demand remains strong for many types of construction projects.” Read more…
